Taming Fantastic Beasts…& Virtual Leadership IIBA

n 2nd November Simon Rookledge hosted the latest International Institute of Business Analysis (IIBA) event in partnership with the Coventry Building Society. The event was hosted by 45 people in total which drew together a varied range of experienced analysts from companies such as Deutsche Bank, Wesleyan Assurance, National Grid, Nationwide and Coventry Building Society to name just a few.

The event was opened by Head of Business Analysis for the Coventry Building Society, Marcia Shanahan who gave an overview of the organisation and the current state of the Business Analysis Practice before introductory talks by Pardeep Dhanda, IIBA Midlands Chairmen and our very own Simon Rookledge before welcoming guest speakers Ian Huke and Penny Pullan for interactive seminars.

Ian Huke, an advocate in business analysis, with experience in both FTSE100 companies and start up software houses, spoke about the individual nuances of Commercial Off the Shelf solutions (COTS) that organisations need to understand to fulfil potential. During his interactive session he was able to explore the technical and functional characteristics of COTS before the room broke for a group exercise to discuss the variables that need to be considered before procurement of a piece of software. Ian was also able to bring to the light the knock on effects of COTS which enabled the room to appreciate the detriments and added value types of software can create.

After a lot of pizza, Penny Pullan was welcomed to the stage to provide a talk on Virtual Leadership. This talk has proven to be the back bone of a hugely successful public speaking career for Penny which next week takes her to Orlando to do the very same talk. During Penny’s session the room was eagle eyed to the interactive whiteboard where she was constantly etching sketches and writing down everybody’s ideas as the room came to terms with the negatives of having to operate virtually, and often cross continent, as opposed to face to face meetings. Penny was able to get the room to reassess their approach to Virtual Management and the room left reinvigorated with ideas on how to tackle tricky projects and engage virtual stakeholders.

The event was a huge success and has received top reviews via the IIBA survey, Simon has also set the foundations for future events and to discuss recruitment with Wesleyan Assurance and Deutsche Bank.
