The demand for permanent placements in Scotland has risen sharply according to the latest Market Report on Jobs. This month saw the steepest increase since July 2015.

Temporary placements also increased sharply in Scotland. The rate of growth was the quickest pace since August 2014. There was a similar trend in the UK as a whole with the fastest increase recorded in four months, although this was at a slower pace.

The number of permanent vacancies continued to rise in Scotland for the third month in a row. The rate of growth was the sharpest seen since the start of 2014.

Again, despite growth remaining steep at a national level, the increase in demand was slower than that of Scotland.

There was also a sharp rise in demand for temporary staff north of the border in April, with the rate of growth picking up to the strongest seen since July 2007.

In contrast, growth in demand for temporary staff softened slightly in the UK as a whole. That said, the rate of expansion remained sharp overall.

In terms of specific sectors, Scottish recruiters reported the strongest increase in demand for both permanent and temporary staff in the IT & Computing and Nursing/Medical/Care industries.

The Executive & Professional category recorded the slowest increase in permanent vacancies. However, the rate of growth was sharp overall, and above the average seen across the UK as a whole.

Average salaries for permanent starters in Scotland and in the UK as whole rose sharply in April. That said, the latest survey indicated that Scottish salary inflation was higher than the UK as a whole for the first time in seven months.

Temporary pay growth was also steep in both Scotland and the UK. The rate was the fastest recorded for a year and the sharpest in four months in the UK. Furthermore, over 40% of firms noted an increase in hourly pay, whereas none reported a fall.
